Theater Ambiance

Pros:

  • "Vintage style theater with great architecture."
  • "The screen on the second floor will transport you back in time and I later read that the original theater space was built around 1925, pretty iconic!"
  • "A beautiful ornate vaulted ceiling nearly one hundred years old painted in red and gold leafing...it's a show in itself."
  • "A really beautiful historic cinema that used to be a Yiddish theatre, worth a visit just for the stunning interior."
  • "The main theater in the Village East cinema has a chandelier, murals, beautifully-crafted molding, and clearly used to be an actual theater a la Broadway."
  • "One of New York’s last remaining Yiddish theatre building."
  • "This building has a lot of character and plays something for everyone."

Cons:

  • "The building is an older, historical building in the East Village, and it's got 'old New York building charm'."
  • "It's an older building, though, with odd layouts (the doors to some auditoriums are in the front next to the screen, and the light from the hallway pours in when someone opens the door)."
  • "Very uncomfortable and old seats, no carpeting on the floors."
  • "The facilities are old and the bathrooms need some fixing."
  • "A lot of the seats are all ripped up."
  • "It needs better sacks and more Hospitality with rhe guess coming in the a movie theater is a place where Happy people go no one wants to seea grumpy person serving refreshments and popcorn."
  • "Possibly the worst cinema I’ve ever been in."

Screening Experience

Pros:

  • "The appeal of this theater lies in the good variety of films they show: a mix of major Hollywood and indie flicks."
  • "The screening room was large enough and had a good quality screen."
  • "It’s a solid auditorium size and often features exclusive interviews and talkbacks with the creators of films."
  • "Frequent 70mm projections."
  • "Wonderful to see the unrestored 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey in a great old room, and lovingly presented -- complete with original walk-in music, intermission, and an intro by the projectionist!"
  • "Worth watching Oppenheimer in 70mm here!"
  • "The 70mm projector and theatre steal the show though. The screen is a super nice size and great quality projector and screen."

Cons:

  • "Beautiful theatre, abysmal audio. I could make out maybe 40% of the dialogue and heard half of the crowd complaining about this as well."
  • "There was a low grade buzzing throughout that interrupted the reflective (no music) scenes."
  • "Because the screen was huge their figures were so distorted they appeared to be 8 to 10 feet tall."
  • "The sound of the main theater is also very bad, lots of reverberation, hard to discern dialogues."
  • "The audio was very hard to hear and understand, it sounded pretty echoey."
  • "The sound only came from the screen directly."
  • "Half of the speakers weren't working properly."

Comfort and Accessibility

Pros:

  • "I was pleased with the seats and legroom (much better than other mainstream chain theaters)."
  • "The seats were comfortable, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the snacks were good, delicious buttery popcorn."
  • "The movie theater was clean and the theater was spacious."
  • "Everyone is so friendly and the prices are lower than so many other Manhattan and Brooklyn theaters."
  • "The staff are all friendly, I assume our movie was the only one playing so they knew exactly what we were there for."
  • "The staff was very friendly and helpful."
  • "Friendly staff and from my experience, they don't search your bag."

Cons:

  • "The actual theaters are small with the old 90's style of theater seating."
  • "The popcorn is way too salty and basically inedible."
  • "Theater seating is bizarre. With 80% of seats on one side of the theatre and the aisle going up on one side leaving only about 4 seats on the other side."
  • "The seats were not as comfortable."
  • "The seats make your back hurt so bad after 40 minutes."
  • "The cups are so big they don’t fit in the cup holders."
  • "The seats haven't been updated to stadium seating so if you are short like me then you would not want to choose a seat behind someone."

Value and Experience

Pros:

  • "This is a beautiful theater."
  • "Reasonably priced, comfortable, plays good films."
  • "Initially, I was a bit hesitant because it looked a bit outdated in pictured. However, the pictures do not do this place justice. It was clean and organized, and overall, it was a great experience."
  • "I go here often to see screenings of Japanese concerts and anime movies, and I love that they are open to this content."
  • "They are constantly playing anime movies for anime fans."
  • "A PLUS IS THAT ALL THE PARKING METERS ARE 2 HOURS & THEY END @ 7 P.M. SO IT'S POSSIBLE TO GET A BARGAIN PARKING & SEE A LESS THAN 2HR. MOVIE WITHOUT GETTING A TKT."
  • "Got student ticket for $10."

Cons:

  • "Tickets are more expensive than in other theaters, $15 and are not worth it."
  • "Theater 5 is too tiny. It’s like watching a movie in your bedroom."
  • "The first time I came I loved the place but the second time I came for a movie that had been out for a long time so I was stuck in the smallest theater with a tiny screen."
  • "The venue itself is well priced and pleasant enough."
  • "And the tickets were 17 dollars."
  • "At this cinema, I got two vastly overpriced soft drinks - $7 each!"
  • "$7 sparkling water! Make sure you take care of your thirst before you come here!"
