Food Quality

Pros:

  • "Had the Classic Omakaze and it was just amazing! fish was absolutely fresh, perfectly cut, soft and seasoned."
  • "Standouts from the omakase include the kinmedai (the fattiest and creamiest I’ve had - I usually don’t like it for its texture but this was a true exception) and the chutoro."
  • "The fish was super fresh and the fatty tuna just melted in our mouths!"
  • "Each piece was not only fresh but also artfully prepared, a feast for the eyes as well as the palate."
  • "The quality of each fish was impeccable and the pacing was perfection."
  • "Every single bite packs an astounding amount of complex flavor and has been perfectly crafted to be that way."
  • "The fish is so fresh and tender here that it melts in your mouth."

Cons:

  • "Decent food, but for the price I think it's fair to expect much more."
  • "Omakase was great, albeit some of the pieces the rice was a bit over vinegary which overpowered the fish."
  • "The only disappointments were the fish at the beginning sat for too long and got warm, and the akami was a bit sinewy."
  • "Unfortunately the cherry salmon and hay-smoked salmon was not to my taste, along with some of the other offerings."
  • "Some pieces were carelessly composed; a light-handed plate-to-mouth pick left rice grains sticking to my fingers."
  • "Pieces of sushi were pre cut, small, and under seasoned."
  • "Most of pieces were plain. They basically gave us rice, fish, and wasabi. There were barely sauce added to the bite."

Service

Pros:

  • "Staff was also great the entire time. Everyone was super attentive and helped with any questions we had."
  • "The wait staff were patient and courteous."
  • "Truly an amazing experience. The staff is courteous, and the sushi chefs are amiable."
  • "The service was simply exceptional, with every need being swiftly and elegantly attended to."
  • "The service remained impeccable, and the quality of the sushi was unparalleled."
  • "The service was the best I've ever experienced, friendly unobtrusive and informative."
  • "The service was some of the best that I’ve ever experienced."

Cons:

  • "I received discriminative threats from a male host in private setting from this restaurant."
  • "The service is terrible. I am talking about the guy who greeted us and checked in for us."
  • "The host (man in glasses) as I’ve read on previous reviews is unprofessional, rude, pretentious and not remotely accommodating."
  • "The chef rudely told us to be quiet and to focus on the food."
  • "The only chef on duty appeared to have the skills and training of, at best, a local line cook."
  • "However, the chef had no knowledge of the fish he was serving."
  • "Our chef barely acknowledged us and didn’t even bother to tell us what some pieces were."

Atmosphere

Pros:

  • "The atmosphere was great, very minimalist with a focus on the food."
  • "Authentic omakase sushi, meticulously crafted and served in an atmosphere that brings traditional Japanese cuisine into a chic, modern, NYC setting."
  • "The atmosphere was luxurious, the staff were attentive and very hospitable."
  • "The restaurant itself is elegant and understated, fitting the romantic as quieter vibes of the West Village."
  • "The restaurant has a very James Bond Casino Royale style and the bar isn't over-packed with people."
  • "As soon as you cross the threshold into what is a very unassuming exterior, you're immediately struck by the thoughtful details and mindful choices made in the décor and ambiance."
  • "Everything on the inside is dialed to perfect balance, from the chromatic pallet, to the art selection, to the music volume."

Cons:

  • "I would not recommend the dining room at all. It’s like the afterthought to the omakase counters unfortunately."
  • "Place is busy and loud."
  • "Knocking a star off because the ambiance is VERY DATED and the service was a little intense at times."
  • "The place is modern, doesn’t give the atmosphere of a Japanese eatery."
  • "The atmosphere is strange and feels like an old hotel room. It’s also super bright in there, which doesn’t help the ambiance."
  • "We had to witness the washing of dishes and preparation for the next seating before we even finished our meal completely."
  • "Food was good we were in the dining room and felt that the decor and the atmosphere was not matching the quality of the food."

Value

Pros:

  • "Sushi was incredibly fresh, and value is great ($180/person for 21 pieces) compared to some other omakase places in the city."
  • "For $150 a person, I thought this was pretty reasonable for the quality and amount of food we got."
  • "The price is worth both the quantity and the quality."
  • "In terms of price/quality ratio this place is outstanding."
  • "I paid $150 for 20 courses which is reasonable."
  • "For 21 pieces $150 isn’t too bad."
  • "The food is reasonably priced."

Cons:

  • "Obviously VERY expensive, so this is very much a 'special occasion' spot."
  • "Also the sake pairing is a little ridiculous. Very small pours and they won’t refill unless you explicitly ask."
  • "Absolutely HORRIBLE. Both my partner and I got food poisoning and they were as obnoxious to say we didn’t get it from their restaurant but from elsewhere."
  • "The wines are excessively expensive, with two glasses recommended by the staff costing $70 and offering nothing exceptional or particularly good."
  • "Uni sampler for $50 was simply overpriced. It shouldn’t even be called a 'sampler' as it only had one piece."
  • "Our meal ended up being $550 a head, including tax and tip - which is a heap."
  • "Atmosphere was good, but could have been better for $900 dinner."
